When water cannot wait
Emergency plumbing on the North Shore: what to tell us
Start by distinguishing an active leak, a sewer backup and a fixture that simply cannot be used. Explain when the problem began, whether several rooms are affected and whether you have managed to stop the water. These observations help us understand the situation without asking you to diagnose it yourself.
Stop using the affected fixture. If a clearly identified shutoff valve is safely accessible, close the corresponding water supply without forcing a seized mechanism. When wastewater is backing up, stop adding water to the drains and keep occupants away from the contaminated area. Stay out of flooded spaces containing electrical equipment. An immediate danger calls for the appropriate emergency services before any attempt to investigate a plumbing leak.
From symptom to service
Choose plumbing services that fit your building
You do not need to choose a replacement part or cleaning method before calling. Tell us what you can observe and which use you need to restore. Our plumbing services directory then helps you prepare a more specific request for a repair, installation or planned project.
Leaks, pressure and water supply
A mark on the ceiling does not necessarily reveal where water started. Note whether it appears while a fixture is being used, after rain or while everything is turned off. Water leak repair addresses the cause found during inspection. If several faucets have little or no water, mention municipal notices and whether neighbours are affected. For the pipe supplying the building, see our water service line service. The affected section and any municipal coordination need to be clarified before work begins.
Blocked drains and recurring backups
One slow sink and several fixtures backing up together point to different checks. Drain cleaning depends on access, pipe condition and the obstruction. For a recurring issue, a camera inspection may document an accessible section. Hydro jetting is selected according to the actual drainage system; it is not automatically suitable for every pipe. Tell us which products have already been poured into the drain and what earlier interventions found.
Hot water and plumbing fixtures
For an electric water heater, prepare the model, location and symptoms: lukewarm water, no hot water or a visible tank leak. Access to the heater and the removal route matter when planning the work. A running toilet, leaking faucet or sink connection belongs with plumbing fixture services. Before buying a replacement, have dimensions, connections and any surrounding work confirmed. A loss of hot water alone does not establish that the entire tank needs replacement.
Basements and prevention
Understand where the water is coming from
Basement water may come from a fixture, a pipe, drainage or infiltration. Note where it first appears, its relationship to rain and which fixtures were being used. A sewer backup requires different attention from a small leak at an accessible fitting. Avoid opening unfamiliar components or adding water to try to reproduce a backup.
A backwater valve limits wastewater returning through the protected drainage arrangement. A sump pump moves water from its basin to an appropriate discharge point. These devices perform different functions. Their selection depends on the actual connections, access and applicable requirements. Keep maintenance points accessible, including after a basement is finished. Covering an inspection point with permanent flooring can make future checks more difficult.

Find your North Shore or Laval destination
Find your destination below, then confirm the address and the service needed by phone. This grouping makes it easier to find plumbing service in areas north of Montréal. Laval is on Île Jésus and has its own municipal administration; it is included with the North Shore destinations here for convenient navigation.

From Saint-Eustache and Deux-Montagnes to Charlemagne and L’Assomption, and north toward Saint-Jérôme, access and installations vary from one property to another. Coverage of a municipality does not establish a local branch or immediate availability at every address. For an active problem, call directly without waiting to choose a local page.
If your building is on the island of Montréal, see our Montréal plumbing directory or West Island hub. The Plomberie LaSalle home page brings together information specific to LaSalle. A regional name or nearby road landmark is useful context, but the full civic address is still needed to organize service.
Municipal network or private plumbing?
A water shutdown or obstructed sewer may require coordination with the City. In Terrebonne, the official sewer backup procedure distinguishes a problem on the private side from one on the municipal side. Keep observations, inspection findings and relevant communications together. These help explain the situation without assuming responsibility before the problem has been located.
In Saint-Eustache, the water opening and shutdown procedure reserves operation of municipal equipment to authorized employees. For planned repairs, check the current arrangements with the City before scheduling the intervention. Do not operate an exterior municipal service box yourself. If sewer line repair with excavation is being considered, clarify the diagnosis, authorizations and restoration work first. The city's involvement and the private contractor's scope should both be understood.
Homes, condominiums and businesses
In a house, identify finished spaces that need protection and access to valves, the water heater and the drain cleanout. Residential plumbing may involve a single repair or several fixtures. In a condominium, identify the manager and whoever can authorize a shared shutdown. Advance notice to affected occupants helps coordinate access and the temporary interruption.
For commercial plumbing, explain operating hours, essential water points and access restrictions. For a kitchen or bathroom project, prepare plans and fixture specifications with our renovation plumbing service. A layout change can affect drainage, venting and the openings needed. Clarify these items before walls are closed, and identify who coordinates the other trades and finishing work.
Prepare for cold weather and longer absences
On the North Shore and in Laval, a pipe exposed to cold, an outdoor faucet or a room with little heat deserves attention before winter. Mention places where freezing has occurred before and recent changes to insulation or heating. If flow disappears, check whether one fixture or the whole building is affected. Our frozen and burst pipe service provides a way to discuss symptoms and access. Do not use an open flame or improvise a thawing method. Tell us whether a leak appeared when water started flowing again.
Before a longer absence, have the person responsible for the building locate useful shutoff valves. Ask for instructions suited to the equipment installed instead of shutting down or draining an unfamiliar system. A slow leak, continuously filling toilet or drain with declining flow can be addressed through planned maintenance. Note which equipment needs monitoring and leave relevant contact information for the person checking the property. Access to a locked utility room should also be arranged in advance.
A better prepared visit
Three steps to organize the work
STEP 01Describe the situation and access
Prepare the address, symptoms and equipment references. Mention a particular entrance, narrow stairs, a locked mechanical space or several affected units. Clear a safe route without moving heavy equipment or dismantling plumbing. For planned work, use our contact page; for active water flow, call. Photographs and earlier reports are useful background when they can be obtained safely.
STEP 02Clarify the proposal and cost
On-site checks establish the possible action in the agreed accessible areas. Cost depends on the diagnosis, access, materials, the pipe being worked on and any coordination required. Ask what is included, which openings are expected and what authorizations are needed. A hidden condition may change the scope; clarify the next action before proceeding. A price without a defined scope cannot explain all the work your building may need.
STEP 03Understand return to service
After the work, ask which fixtures can be used and what signs to monitor. Checks relate to the components worked on and the agreed conditions. Keep part references, useful findings and maintenance recommendations. If walls, flooring or landscaping were opened, clarify their restoration as well. This information helps you coordinate any follow-up with the owner or manager and distinguish the completed repair from future work that may still be recommended.
