Water service line repair and replacement
A leak beside the main shutoff, a sudden loss of flow or a water supply pipe that needs replacing calls for a clear diagnosis. Plomberie LaSalle assesses your water service line and main valve to identify the work needed, the location of the fault and any municipal coordination required.
We receive requests across Montréal, the West Island, Laval, the North Shore and the South Shore, within our service areas. Tell us your address so we can confirm availability and plan the next step for your building.
514 312-3198 — Describe the problem
An active leak or no water: what to do first
If water is escaping inside the building, close the indoor main shutoff only when it is safely accessible and operates normally. Do not force a seized handle or put pressure on weakened piping. Report water that continues flowing after closure, a valve that leaks more when touched or water rising in the basement. Tell us whether the leak is contained or still spreading.
Stay out of any area where water could be touching electrical equipment or wiring. Do not cross water to reach an electrical panel. Our guide to first steps during a water leak helps you prepare a description without taking plumbing apart. If the situation presents an immediate danger, deal with that danger before approaching the installation.
Private service line, outdoor valve or municipal supply?
The water service line carries drinking water towards your building. The indoor main shutoff isolates its supply; it serves a different purpose from the outdoor valve and the public water main beneath the street. Before recommending main water line repair on your property, we identify the section involved and the access or authorizations the proposed work requires.
In Montréal, requests to close, reopen or locate the outdoor service valve go through the borough. Procedures depend on the address. A plumber being present does not authorize work on a public main or public valve. The municipal service must confirm its own intervention and the arrangements for the property concerned.
Use the process for your municipality
An independent island municipality, Laval or another North or South Shore city may have a different procedure. For example, Pointe-Claire requests 48 hours’ notice for planned water shutoffs, except in emergencies. That notice period should not be applied across our entire service territory. Confirm local arrangements before committing to a work date.
Prepare the exact address, the owner or authorized representative’s details and any existing documents about the connection. Property boundaries, permits and physical access may need verification. We define the plumbing work being considered, while the competent municipal department confirms the responsibilities and steps that apply to its network. Ask early if other planned street work could affect the project.
Sudden low water pressure: diagnose before excavating
Weak flow does not establish that the buried service pipe needs replacement. A problem at one fixture first points towards its local supply, faucet or aerator. A building-wide change requires comparison at several outlets and a clear account of whether it appeared suddenly, developed gradually or occurs only when several fixtures run together. These observations help focus the investigation without treating a symptom as a confirmed cause.
A partly closed valve, a restriction, a pressure control device where one is installed or a leak can affect the available supply. We look for consistent evidence and take appropriate measurements for the installation. Pressure with no fixtures running and performance while water is flowing provide different information. A description of weak flow alone cannot establish the diameter or scope of a replacement service line.
If neighbours also have no water or a municipal notice announces work, check the public supply situation first. During winter, frozen piping is another possibility: see our frozen and burst pipe service. If the investigation identifies an indoor leak elsewhere, water leak repair addresses that particular fault. Keep a short record of when the change occurs and which fixtures are affected.
Main shutoff valve repair is a separate decision
A main valve that turns without stopping the water, seeps around the stem or has a damaged body may need repair or replacement. Shut off valve repair does not automatically mean replacing the entire service pipe. Equally, installing a new valve will not correct damage to a buried line. We distinguish the two scopes so the proposed work addresses the condition actually found, rather than combining unrelated replacements.
A reliable way to isolate the water upstream is essential before removing the main valve. If the indoor valve no longer closes, an appropriate shutoff must be arranged instead of dismantling pressurized plumbing. The replacement choice depends on pipe size, materials, configuration and accessibility. Québec’s RBQ explains the role of shutoff valves in isolating water supplies during work, including in residential buildings with multiple occupants.
For a duplex, rental property or condominium, establish who authorizes the interruption and which units will lose water. Keep the valve accessible and describe any difficult access before the visit. After the work, ask to be shown its location and normal operation. Permanent cabinetry or stored belongings that conceal the main shutoff can make a later emergency harder to manage. A shared supply also requires clear communication with the people affected.
Repair one section or replace the water service line?
A localized repair can be considered when the fault is limited and the surrounding pipe condition supports a lasting intervention. Replacement may be worth evaluating when damage is extensive, failures recur or the material and configuration no longer suit the project. These decisions follow an assessment. The age of the house alone does not prove that every section of its water service needs replacement, and a recent repair does not confirm the condition of the remaining buried pipe.
The route, actual depth, foundation entry, working space and surface structures influence the method. Other underground utilities must also be considered and located before excavation. A method that reduces surface opening is not suitable for every property or soil condition. We clarify the approach proposed and what remains to be confirmed before work begins, including access through a finished basement and the limits of surface restoration.
If lead is suspected, do not infer the material from the neighbourhood’s age or a pipe’s colour alone. Montréal’s lead service line replacement guidance distinguishes public and private sections and describes coordination with the city. Under that Montréal program, owners are responsible for private service line replacement; the city handles the public portion. Confirm the material and the program applicable to the address. We do not promise to replace a public section or independently handle every lead service replacement. Keep invoices and photographs of previous work available for verification.
How the intervention is prepared
01 · AssessExamine the symptoms and access
We collect the problem history, examine accessible components and identify what needs checking before work. Describe previous repairs, the known outdoor valve location and parking or access constraints. Existing drawings are useful but do not replace on-site location. Tell us about finished surfaces, a shared connection or an addition that could affect the route, and make sure the person responsible can provide access.
02 · DefineAgree on the scope and coordinate the shutoff
The proposal separates diagnosis, the indoor valve, the service pipe and any work needed to reach it. We clarify municipal coordination, the expected interruption for the particular project and exclusions. A business should explain operating hours and production needs; a building manager should notify affected occupants. Discuss any essential water needs in advance rather than assuming a temporary supply is included or always possible.
03 · CheckRestore the supply and verify the result
After the planned repair, water is restored in a controlled way and the affected connections are checked. Verification depends on the work performed and applicable requirements. Flushing, use and follow-up instructions are explained for the installation and municipal directions involved. A completed repair does not by itself establish that every separate water-quality concern has been resolved; follow any continuing notice from the responsible authority.
What affects water service line repair costs?
Replacing an accessible valve is a different project from exposing piping beneath a paved driveway. Length, diameter, materials, fittings, depth, soil and obstacles all affect labour and equipment needs. An active infiltration can change the sequence of work as well. A useful price must describe a defined scope; one universal phone estimate cannot reliably represent all service connections or all conditions encountered beneath a property.
Where excavation is involved, ask what is included for soil removal, backfill, the slab, asphalt and landscaping. Clarify potential municipal charges, permits, utility location and work by other professionals. Comparable proposals need the same boundaries and an explanation of how unexpected conditions will be handled. Ask who restores each affected surface and whether that restoration is temporary or final. These questions help avoid comparing a plumbing-only price with a broader construction project.
Before the visit, gather previous invoices, municipal notices and available photographs. Clear a path to the valve without disturbing fragile components. Tenants should notify the building’s responsible person; condominium managers should identify who approves the work. Use our contact page to prepare a request, or call when a leak is worsening. Explain access restrictions before an appointment is set, including locked rooms, tenant access and shared mechanical spaces.
Does a faulty main valve mean the entire line needs replacing?
Not necessarily. The valve and service pipe need separate evaluation. Valve work may be sufficient if the pipe is sound, while a buried leak requires a different investigation. The water must be safely isolated upstream before the main valve is dismantled.
Does low flow prove there is an underground leak?
No. Several conditions can produce the same symptom. Record the fixtures affected and when it happens, then have the installation assessed. Visible water on the property or a continuous sound is useful to report, but neither identifies the fault’s exact location on its own.
Can service line work be considered during a sewer excavation?
Evaluating both projects together can be useful when access is already being planned, while keeping their scopes distinct. A drinking-water line and a sewer have different functions. Our sewer line repair and excavation service can help clarify shared access constraints without assuming both lines need replacement. For the sewer side, our guide to private and public sewer responsibilities helps you prepare the relevant information.
