Plumber preparing an electric drain snake for drain cleaning

Start with the symptoms

Which fixture is no longer draining?

Slow drainage, a rising toilet bowl or standing bathwater does not automatically identify the blockage. The obstruction may be close to the fixture, in a shared branch or farther along the main drain. Describe what you actually observed and which other fixtures are affected. You do not need to repeat a test that could cause an overflow simply to demonstrate the problem.

Clogged toilet: stop flushing when the bowl rises

If water rises in the bowl, do not flush again. Tell us about a dropped object, a sudden blockage or repeated episodes. An obstruction inside the toilet passage requires a different assessment from a blockage farther down the pipe. The equipment must suit the fixture and its connections. Depending on access and the findings, removing the toilet may be necessary to reach or retrieve the obstruction.

Mention whether the shower or floor drain reacts when the toilet is used. That connection between fixtures changes the assessment. Drain unclogging will not necessarily correct a faulty flush mechanism, a leak at the base or a worn tank component. Ask for the proposed work on each issue to be explained separately before deciding what to authorize.

Clogged kitchen sink: standing water in one or both bowls

A blocked kitchen sink may hold water in a single bowl or both sides. Let us know if a dishwasher shares the drainage connection, and avoid starting it until drainage is under control. Food residue and grease deposits are possible causes, but the appearance of the water cannot confirm the material or the location of the blockage.

Clear the cabinet under the sink if it is dry and safe to reach. Do not open a trap containing drain chemicals. The plumber examines accessible connections and selects a suitable entry point. If the branch is blocked beyond the trap, emptying the trap alone can leave the actual problem untouched inside the wall. Tell us if previous work has changed the sink connections.

Blocked bathtub, slow shower or gurgling bathroom sink

Hair, soap residue and debris can collect near a bathroom drain. A blocked bathtub calls for checking the drain mechanism and pipe access before forcing a cable into the opening. Explain whether water rises when another fixture runs, whether the problem developed gradually, and whether a strainer or stopper appears damaged. These details help distinguish an accessible obstruction from a broader drainage issue.

Gurgling may accompany a drainage problem without proving where the fault is located. Avoid dismantling an overflow assembly or pushing a rigid object into the pipe at random. Access behind a bathtub or under a shower may be limited. Mention any existing access panel so the visit can be planned without assuming that hidden connections can be reached immediately.

Several fixtures drain slowly

Main drain cleaning or an active sewer backup?

When several fixtures drain poorly, an obstruction in a shared section becomes a possibility. Main drain cleaning must account for the cleanout, the building layout and the accessible piping. In a duplex or condominium, ask affected occupants to stop the relevant water uses and notify the person responsible for the building. Water added upstairs may appear at a lower drainage opening.

If sewage comes out of the floor drain or enters the basement, see our sewer backup service and report the rising water by phone. This requires attention to the backup and the hazards present, beyond clearing an isolated slow fixture. Do not walk through water to reach electrical equipment. Explain any unsafe access before the visit is arranged.

Choose the method after assessment

What happens during a drain-cleaning visit?

The visit starts with your observations, previous attempts and available access points. The plumber distinguishes the fixture from the pipe serving it. The aim is to restore drainage and explain the limits of the findings, rather than assuming from the outset that the whole line needs replacement. Mention a recurring blockage even if the water has temporarily drained away.

  1. Identify a suitable entry point

Access may be near the fixture or through a cleanout. A crowded cabinet, damaged cap or concealed pipe can complicate the work. Ask what must be removed and what will be put back before proceeding. Opening a wall or floor is a separate scope that should be explained, including any finishing work that remains outside the plumbing intervention.

  2. Clear the obstruction with suitable equipment

A drain snake or mechanical cable may be used to remove or pass through certain blockages. Pipe diameter, material, changes of direction and apparent condition influence the choice. More force does not replace diagnosis. A trapped object and deposits along a longer section can call for different approaches. The proposed method should reflect what can actually be reached and assessed.

  3. Check drainage and explain the next step

Testing is adapted to the fixtures and available access. Ask what was cleared, what remains uncertain and which signs mean you should call again. Restored flow is an observable result; it does not prove that every buried joint is sound. Keep the recommendations and findings when the issue has a history of returning.

When are a camera or hydro jetting useful?

A drain camera inspection may help examine an accessible section when blockages recur or a defect is suspected. Water, deposits and the remaining obstruction can limit visibility. Ask which section was actually viewed and whether additional locating is needed to interpret the images. A camera is an assessment tool, not a substitute for explaining what the findings mean.

Hydro jetting may suit some more extensive cleaning needs. It is not automatically the first choice for a clogged toilet or a pipe whose condition is uncertain. The plumber must confirm that the approach is appropriate and distinguish this work from the initial unclogging in the proposal. Do not select equipment solely because a different property needed it.

When the same blockage keeps returning

Record how long it has been since the last clearing, which fixtures are affected and how the symptoms return. A quick recurrence warrants reviewing the cause rather than repeating the same action indefinitely. Without assessment, it does not establish roots, poor slope or a broken line. Previous invoices, images and notes can help avoid losing useful information between visits.

If a sewer connection appears involved, location and documentation become important. For example, Dollard-des-Ormeaux’s sewer-backup procedure describes video and written documentation when the public portion is suspected. Check the procedure for your own municipality. Those requirements cannot be applied automatically throughout the service territory, and a slow fixture alone does not establish municipal responsibility.

Understand the scope before authorizing work

What affects the cost of drain cleaning?

Access, the fixture, the length to be treated and the obstruction influence the cost. Easy access under a sink is a different job from a difficult shared line. Emergency service conditions, specialized equipment, camera work or fixture removal should be clarified. One universal price cannot accurately describe these different situations, and a photograph of standing water cannot reveal the full condition of a hidden pipe.

Before the visit, ask about assessment conditions and applicable charges. On site, confirm what the proposed work includes, how drainage will be checked, cleanup of the work area and the limits of the intervention. If a new finding requires an additional step, ask for its purpose, scope and cost before authorizing it. Clarify whether any parts or reinstatement work are included.

In a business or occupied building, the timing of fixture shutdowns and access to common spaces can affect arrangements. Identify who can approve the work. Clearing the drain and repairing a damaged pipe are separate decisions. A replacement recommendation should be supported by the observations available, with a clear explanation of what is known and what still requires investigation.

Questions about blocked drains

Does a toilet that clogs need replacing?

Not necessarily. An obstruction, a trapped object, a flushing problem and a pipe defect need to be distinguished. The condition of the fixture and the findings guide the decision. Ask why replacement would be preferable to clearing the blockage or making a targeted repair, and what the proposed work is expected to resolve.

The water eventually drains: can the visit wait?

A slow drain may remain partly usable, but worsening symptoms, recurring blockage or reactions in other fixtures justify a call. Stop using it if the level rises or overflows. Describe how the situation has changed so the appointment priority and precautions can be confirmed. Temporary improvement does not identify the cause or guarantee that the blockage is gone.

How can I reduce future blockages?

Keep grease and food scraps out of the sink and put wipes in the garbage. Clean accessible strainers and keep cleanouts reachable. If symptoms return despite these habits, have the line assessed. Routine care cannot repair a structural defect, and repeatedly adding products can obscure the need for an investigation.
